Wildlife is at the heart of life at Slate House Farm.
At Slate House Farm, we believe that farming and wildlife should thrive side by side.
Our approach is rooted in creating a working landscape that supports both productivity and biodiversity. Across the farm, we’ve carefully developed spaces that welcome nature in all its forms, helping to restore the balance between cultivated land and the wild.
One of our proudest achievements is the network of wildflower gardens we’ve planted, bursting with colour through spring and summer. These vibrant patches are a haven for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators that are vital not only to our own food production but to the wider ecosystem. We’ve also planted native hedgerows and left field margins untouched to provide natural corridors for wildlife to move safely across the land.
Our commitment to birds is evident in the numerous nesting boxes we’ve installed around the farm—designed for everything from robins and wrens to owls and swifts. These boxes are regularly monitored and cleaned, ensuring that each season brings returning visitors. We’ve also created hedgehog hideaways and insect hotels to offer shelter to the smaller, often overlooked allies in our ecosystem.

Water is a key part of our rewilding efforts. We’ve added natural ponds and shallow scrapes to encourage frogs, newts, and dragonflies, and to offer a watering spot for birds and mammals. These wet habitats are alive with activity and are becoming an increasingly important part of our conservation work.
We manage our land with low-impact, regenerative principles, always thinking about the long-term health of the soil, the water, and the creatures that depend on both. Every decision we make—from where we graze livestock to how we grow flowers—is guided by a deep respect for the natural world.
For us, a healthy, vibrant farm is one that buzzes, chirps, rustles, and sings. Encouraging wildlife is not just an add-on—it’s a core part of our vision for a balanced, self-sufficient, and ecologically rich future.
