Identification and background

Bramble is a variable group with arching thorny stems, compound leaves, white or pink flowers and aggregate black fruits. Gather ripe fruit that comes away easily.

Benefits and traditional uses

  • Fruit provides fibre, vitamins and antioxidant pigments.
  • Leaf tea is traditionally used as an astringent drink or cooled gargle.
  • Berries are versatile in jams, crumbles, sauces and freezing.

Be aware

  • Wash carefully and avoid low growth beside busy roads or heavily dog-walked paths.
  • Persistent diarrhoea or throat symptoms need proper assessment.
  • Bramble thorns can cause injury and some people react to the fruit.

Blackberry and apple compote

Ingredients

  • 300 g blackberries
  • 2 apples, peeled and chopped
  • A splash of water
  • Sugar or honey to taste

Method

  1. Wash and inspect the fruit.
  2. Simmer apples with a splash of water until beginning to soften.
  3. Add blackberries and cook for another 5–8 minutes.
  4. Sweeten lightly if needed.

How to use: Serve with porridge, yoghurt, pancakes or pudding.

Storage: Refrigerate and use within 3 days, or freeze.
